Love It A Lot - Natural Dog Food Critique
No one, including myself, has been successful in getting any sort of satisfactory reply from Canidae when asked if they had changed formulas, ingredient suppliers, etc. I'm disappointed, Canidae was one of the few 'quality foods' that had not raised prices significantly over the past year and was still affordable for most dog owners.
I also feed my two dogs Newman's Own biscuits as treats. I adopted a dog that was raised by a bunch of frat age boys. I do not feed my dogs table scraps and use Milk Bones for treats. As far as I am concerned a little gas is fine as long as it is coming out and is not stuck inside, that is when it becomes a problem. My two small dogs took to the food immediately so well in fact I have had to move up the subscription for the 12 pound bag. Since they are young it's not immediate if they look healthier or bouncier as they seem to be that way all the time. We have two dogs and this food does them well. I gradually switched over from Blue Buffalo who raised their prices.
I fed and recommended this food for several years as one of the best dry foods available. However, over the last few months (late 2007) something has changed. Prior to that I used NutroMax. Wow, what an amazing food. I like the 4-pound bags for freshness because my dog is small and takes a while to eat that much, but there are other sizes available to suit larger dogs. I like Newman's Own for my family due to its consistent quality and good ingredients; I like have the opportunity to provide the same quality products to my animals.
Anyway, I started giving them more raw food and the gas has disappeared and my girl sheltie no longer has anal gland issues. Their teeth are cleaner too.
She never vomits anymore. Her scat is always firm, making her easy to clean up after.
Use the food cost calculator. Your dog eats less of this than many of the garbage filled brands. Canidae doesn't help my dogs' particular issues like raw does. However, Canidae is a heck of a lot easier and cheaper to feed, and my furry kids certainly do love Canidae's taste, they inhale it. I have been using this food for 4 years since I read raving reviews on many sites. I was looking for a reasonably priced food which was better in quality than the cheap chain crap. When we were feeding a well know premium pet store brand we were there at least 1 time every six weeks. They love the taste of Newman's and it keeps their tummy in tip top shape.
We tried it out and after the initial adjustment (necessary with any food) both seem to be doing well on it. With a giant breed and a large mutt, we go through about 90 pounds a month, so I wanted something affordable but quality and this fits the bill.
