Deciding Between Soft and Hard Dog Food

by Seram Marquis

So now that you have made the decision to feed your puppy natural puppy food there is another relevant dog food decision you still have to make: which is better, soft or hard dog food? It may seem like a trivial decision, but it really isn't because nutrition is such an important factor in dog health issues such as scratching, itching and dog hot spot.

Dogs without doubt are fond of soft wet canned dog food. That is really is no surprise as soft dog food is more natural and more aromatic compared to a bag of dry kibble.

Unbelievable it maybe to us but how their food looks like is of little importance to dogs. To dogs the only significant things about their food are the taste and smell. Next to "people food", they find soft canned food the tastiest. This is mostly due to its inviting aroma.

However, you've probably heard that dry food and other crunchy items are essential for the dental health of your pet. That's not a myth: your dog does need something to chew on.

If you feed your dog exclusively on canned dog food, you need to supplement with something to chew on. But it doesn't necessarily have to be dry dog food. If you don't want to feed your dog dry dog food, you can use dog treats such as dog biscuits. In addition, your dog can exercise her jaw with chew toys. That way your dog can get a regular teeth and jaw workout.

While visiting the veterinarian for checkups, the vet will examine your dog's teeth and will alert or warn you of any issue that needs attending and correcting with a different type of dog food, more opportunities to chew, or even dietary supplements.

Hard materials are needed by dogs for chewing. This is how they give their powerful jaw muscles a workout and strengthen their teeth. It is a way for them to take care of their teeth. Hard chew items also help in loosening the build up of plaque and tartar.

Choosing the best natural puppy food is important as it sets the condition and is necessary in the maintenance of your puppy's dental health and nutritional requirements. If you choose to feed your dog the wet, soft and delicious canned foods that it loves, just make sure you also provide your dog with ample chew items it can sink his teeth into.
